What happens to an industry built around clicks, rankings, and traffic?
Clicks and rankings will remain useful, but they will no longer tell the whole story. Brands will also need to measure citations, AI mentions, answer visibility, sentiment, and competitor presence, none of which appear in a traditional analytics dashboard because no click happens. A customer who gets a complete answer from an assistant and never visits your site still forms a view of your brand from what the assistant said, and most businesses have no way to see what that was. Tools built around search volume, keyword rank, and page traffic assume that being found means being clicked. They cannot tell you whether a model mentioned you, described you accurately, or recommended someone else. The harder question for the industry is whether those mentions influenced a lead or a sale, which is a much less direct line to draw than a click.
