AI visibility, explained

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO helps your website rank in search results and earn clicks. GEO helps your brand appear, get cited, and be recommended inside AI-generated answers. The two overlap: a page that cannot be crawled ranks nowhere and is cited nowhere. GEO adds requirements search never had. The crawlers behind ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini each need permission in robots.txt. The homepage has to say what the business is in its title, description and first heading, because an assistant reads those first. Structured data has to name the organization. And the content has to be written in passages an assistant can quote on their own. You can check most of this yourself in a browser: open your robots.txt, look for an llms.txt, and read your homepage as a stranger would. The free Viscovery check does the same three reads and scores them.
