Why does AI recommend my competitors even when we rank well on Google?
Google rankings do not make a brand trustworthy to AI. Competitors may have clearer expertise, stronger third-party mentions, fresher content, or more consistent business information, and one gap is enough for a model to prefer them. Ranking algorithms and assistants weigh different evidence: a page can rank by matching a query and still read as vague to a model deciding whom to cite. The gaps we see most are a homepage that never states what the business does, a robots.txt rule blocking GPTBot or ClaudeBot that nobody chose, business details that differ between listings, and no recent coverage from anyone but the brand itself. Some of this takes minutes to check: open your robots.txt, then compare how your site and a competitor’s each describe themselves. A Viscovery audit asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity your keywords and shows which sources they cite instead of you.
