What does the shift from ranking to recommendation mean?
Traditional search asks, “Where does my website rank?” AI search asks, “Is my brand included in the answer?” Visibility now depends on whether AI considers your business relevant, trustworthy, and worth recommending. Ranking is a position on a page. Recommendation is a decision about whether you are named at all, and it rests on different evidence: a clear statement of what you offer, structured data that removes ambiguity, third-party mentions that back up your own claims, and content dated recently enough to be treated as current. Two businesses can rank side by side on Google and be treated very differently in an AI answer, because one gives the model enough clear, corroborated information to cite and the other does not. Checking your robots.txt, your structured data, and how plainly your homepage states who you are is where to start.
